On October 19, The Frankfurt Book Fair will launch its new forum, THE ARTS+: The First International Marketplace for the Business, and FADEL will be a proud sponsor, participant, and presenter.

THE ARTS+ Conference focuses on digital technologies for art and culture–a field that is beginning to face similar disruptions as music, print and film. The new forum will confront intellectual property issues that apply to art ownership in today’s sharing economy and discuss new business models and synergies between the arts and technology.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF CREATIVITY – HOW IP EXPLOITATION CAN GROW YOUR BUSINESS
Friday, October 21, 11.00 – 12.00, THE ARTS+ Salon

Digitization has created numerous possibilities for the creative business: Technology opens up the way to content without borders and lifts IP exploitation to a new level.  New platforms and services facilitate an easier and more effective way to deal with rights and licenses. In short: IP becomes tradable on a big scale. That’s a big chance for everyone who owns, manages or deals with IP. Potentially. This session will give an overview of current developments, upcoming possibilities and challenges in the IP business.

Panelists will discuss and (re)define the meaning of IP in the digital age, lead attendees through the jungle of possibilities, and demonstrate how to tap the potential of (unused) ideas and inventions, archives and contents, designs and artistic works – today and tomorrow.

Panelists:

  • ROBERT AMBROSE, Strategy & Business Development Director, FADEL
  • CÉLINE KELLER, Motion Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Animator
  • COLIN LOVRINOVIC, Managing Director, Humming Records & Gould.Finch
  • MICHELE J. WOODS, Director, Copyright Law Division, Culture and Creative Industries Sector, World Intellectual Property Organization

SETTING THE AGENDA: FINDING STRATEGIES FOR THE FUTURE OF IP EXPLOITATION IN THE DIGITAL JUNGLE

New technology is fundamentally changing the way creative industries manage content and reach audiences. In the digital jungle it’s more crucial than ever to handle intellectual property rights strategically. In this exclusive session for creative industry leaders we’ll exchange ideas and new approaches for securing the future of our content businesses. We’ll be at the cutting edge of strategies for controlling and exploiting IP in a digital world, identifying tactics for success, and how to avoid the traps of competitors, device makers and pirates.

While sharing ideas and learning from your peers, you’ll be helping set the agenda for the creative industries’ approach to IP management, to be published in a white paper after the session.

Some of the issues on the table include:

  • Should we enable or resist the transition from content ownership (“buying”) to content access (“renting”)?
  • How can rights management strategies respond to continually emerging consumer technology like virtual reality?
  • Should we switch the focus of rights management from supporting B2B transactions to meeting the needs of content consumers?
  • What can we learn from other content industries like music, movies and educational publishing – have they stayed in control of rights?
  • Do need a new strategy to manage content co-created and owned by multiple artists, and distributed in multiple formats and components?
  • Are traditional gatekeepers like publishers being eroded by new platforms connecting rights owners directly with audiences?
